Public Meeting on Franchising Garbage Pick-Up in Tremont

The Village Board of Trustees will host a public meeting at 7:00 tonight (MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2023) in the Community Center regarding waste disposal within the Village limits.

Over the past several months, the Board has been soliciting bids from companies regarding an exclusive agreement for the Village. If the Trustees choose to pursue a franchise arrangement similar to what is found in other municipalities, an Ordinance would be passed and all community members would be required to participate. This change allows the waste management firms to streamline their operations which is designed to result in greater accountability on the company, enhanced services, and lower costs for community members.

At tonight’s meeting, Village Officials plan to share the information found in the various submissions and how the process would play out for residents. Feedback from those in attendance will be encouraged. After a preliminary review of proposals, a few general highlights have been noted:
- Cheaper monthly pick-up prices for consumers.
- Residents would receive one 95-gallon rollable garbage can. If two cans are needed, they could be secured for an additional cost. Typically, there would be no limits on trash pick-up the two weeks following Christmas.
- Allowances would be made for a free annual centralized “bulky-item” community clean-up during a designated time period each year.
- Free service for the Turkey Festival
- Recycling program available every other week.
- In some proposals, electronic waste options would be available at no cost to residents.

The Village Board can only negotiate with companies on behalf of residents within Village limits. It should also be noted that any change will be for residential services only. Business arrangements are not included. No action will be taken at tonight’s public hearing but we would anticipate a decision very soon regarding the future of waste pick-up as residents continue to see rising costs of this necessary service.

Annual Water Flushing to take place the Week of October 17-21

Water Main flushing allows any sediment and stagnant water to be removed from the distribution system and also provides an opportunity to test the operability of the hydrant.

During flushing, water may become temporarily discolored and customers should avoid washing clothes until the water has cleared. These steps are taken to improve the overall water quality within the distribution system and to ensure the delivery of the highest quality water possible.

Thank you for your patience,
